Arthritis is the inflammation of the joints which leads to the breakdown of cartilages that protect the joints and promote smooth movement. Spondylitis is also an inflammation of the joints specifically of the spinal bones and of joints between spinal bones and pelvis. Arthritis and spondylitis can be caused by a variety of factors including genetics, autoimmune diseases, infections and general wear and tear. Physical therapy, rest, anti-inflammatory and corticosteroid medications are used to treat these conditions. Certain nutrients may help prevent and manage arthritis and spondylitis naturally without any side effects.

Calcium-Rich Foods

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and is essential for strong bones and teeth. According to the Spondylitis Association of America, a calcium-rich diet can reduce the risk of osteoporosis which is prevalent in spondylitis and arthritis patients. An article published in the "Arthritis Today" recommends 1,000 mg of calcium to all individuals under the age of 50 years and 1,200 mg of calcium to everyone over the age of 50 years. Calcium can be obtained by including foods such as milk and milk products, green leafy vegetables, bread, and fortified cereals and juices in the diet.

Fruits and Vegetables

Vitamins and minerals in fruits and vegetables are essential for proper functioning of the immune system and to prevent infections that may cause arthritis, also known as septic arthritis. Vitamins C and E are antioxidant vitamins with ability to protect immune cells from the effects of harmful free radicals. Vitamin C, as per MedlinePlus, also plays an important role in the repair and maintenance of joints, and hence, may help prevent spondylitis and arthritis. In fact, the John Hopkins Arthritis Center states that vitamins B, C, D and E deficiencies are commonly observed, especially in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It is, therefore, important to include at least five servings of fruits and vegetables in the diet every day for healthy joints. "Home Remedies" also suggests that a diet consisting of only eight to nine bananas, which consist of high amounts of vitamin B6, for three to four days may help treat arthritis pain. Alkaline vegetable juices made from carrots, celery and red beets may also help dissolve the deposits around the joints, thereby relieving the symptoms of arthritis.

Omega 3s

Foods such as flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, soybeans, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and cold water fish are rich sources of essential fatty acids known as omega 3 fatty acids. Apart from promoting healthy heart and nerve function, some studies, such as the one published in September-October 2006 edition of the "Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology," have found omega 3 fatty acids may also help decrease the symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis.
