A treadmill lubricant is perhaps the most important accessory that you will need for your treadmill. It can be the solution to many problems you may come across during the life of your treadmill. It may also lead to cost savings if you apply it yourself rather than having a mechanic come out to service your treadmill.
What is Treadmill Lubricant
A treadmill lubricant is any form of liquid that can be utilized to keep the belt of a treadmill running in a smooth manner. If used properly and on time, then treadmill lubricants can increase the life of your treadmill significantly. While a treadmill belt will cost you over $100 to replace, treadmill lubricants are much cheaper and are easily available.
Homemade Lubricant
You can make homemade lubricant by mixing engine oil with grease and applying it on the belt. Keep it on for an hour or so, and then wipe it off with a cloth. You should keep in mind that applying homemade lubricant to your treadmill may compromise your warranty.
Regular Maintenance of the Treadmill with Lubricant
According to Aaron Co, founder of Treadmill Tips, maintenance of the treadmill belt is necessary at least once a year. However, if you are a heavy user of your treadmill, then you need to lubricate your treadmill once every six months. These numbers can be adjusted if there is more than one person using the treadmill at any given time.
Why Treadmill Lubricant is Necessary
According to personal trainer and runner up in the Mr. World competition Chase Jones, lubricants are important because it will delay the wear and tear of your treadmill belt and also keep it in good condition so that you don't have to replace the belt quickly. Jones says that if you don't use a treadmill lubricant, your treadmill's deck will start wearing out sooner than necessary, giving rise to more friction between the belt and the deck, thus wearing out the belt faster.
Things to Consider
Not all treadmills require lubrication. Aaron Co informs that there are many treadmills that do not require the lubricant, as the belts are made with a material that is already pretreated. Make sure you know which kind of treadmill you have, otherwise you will ruin your treadmill belt.
