Athletic tape is commonly used to prevent and protect injuries such as sprained ankles or wrists, which are common in sports activities. Although only one kind of athletic tape was once available, consumers today have a variety of options from which to choose, including pre wrap, standard sports tape, stretch tape and Kinesio tape.

Pre Wrap

Pre wrap is made to buffer the irritation that may result from placing standard athletic tape directly on your skin. This type of wrap is especially important if you have hair on the skin where you're applying adhesive tape. According to IthacaSports.com, pre wrap may also be used to securely fasten cold packs and bandages. In addition, some people use it to tie back their hair.

Standard Sports Tape

Standard sports tape is designed to provide comfort and support for body parts with weak or sensitive muscles over the course of approximately three to four hours. As Articlesbase.com explains, cotton tape is preferred because it allows your skin to breathe and eliminate moisture. They also recommend checking the wrapped area on a regular basis to ensure it isn't swollen and is that there is adequate blood flow.

Stretch Tape

Stretch tape is made with a rubber based adhesive that sticks to itself and resembles a soft gauze. According to IthacaSports.com, it is mostly used for wrapping pressure dressings and strapping muscle injuries. Although it may not provide as much support as standard sports tape, stretch tape offers substantially more flexibility and range of motion.

Kinesio Tape

Kinesio tape is designed to effectively stabilize your joints and muscles without detracting from your range of motion. In addition, because it allows the skin to breathe and doesn't hinder circulation, Kinesio tape can be worn for up to three days. According to Articlesbase.com, this type of tape supports your body's kinesiology and aids in the natural healing process.
