Psoriasis is a skin condition that affects more than 6 million Americans, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. It is marked by the accumulation of dry skin cells on the surface of your skin, which appear as red or pink raised blemishes. Psoriasis may also cause itching, joint pain and thickened, discolored nails. Although the cause of psoriasis is unknown, certain foods may aggravate this condition. Check with your physician if you plan to eliminate foods from your diet to treat psoriasis.

Conventionally-grown Produce

Conventionally-grown fruits and vegetables are raise using chemical pesticides and fertilizers. The chemicals in these vegetables may cause allergic reactions that may worsen the symptoms of psoriasis and increase the frequency of outbreaks, according to Phyllis Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Opt for organically-grown fruits and vegetables, which are typically raised without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Simple Sugars

Simple sugars may trigger psoriasis outbreaks, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Foods containing simple sugars may cause allergic reactions associated with this condition. Simple sugars are found in foods and beverages such as packaged convenience foods, doughnuts, sugary cereals, soft drinks, pies, cakes and candies. Also, avoid alcoholic beverages, which your body quickly converts into simple sugars.

Saturated Fats

Saturated fats may worsen psoriasis symptoms and cause more frequent outbreaks my inhibiting the removal of toxins and wastes from your intestinal tract, according to Balch. This may allow toxins to build up in your bloodstream. Psoriasis is also linked to your body's inability to metabolize fats -- because saturated fats are more difficult to metabolize than unsaturated fats, they may trigger outbreaks. Saturated fats are found in red meats, dairy products and eggs. Eggs and dairy may also cause allergic reactions associated with psoriasis.

Caffeine-Containing Foods

Foods and beverages containing caffeine, such as chocolate, black tea and coffee, may cause dehydration in your bloodstream. This may impair your body's ability to eliminate toxins and wastes that accumulate in your blood, allowing these substances to trigger psoriasis symptoms, according to Balch.

Other Foods

Other allergy-causing foods may contribute to psoriasis outbreaks. These include wheat gluten, corn and citrus fruits. If your doctor suspects that one of these foods may cause a psoriasis-related allergic reaction, eliminate that food from your diet two to four weeks to determine if your psoriasis symptoms improve.
