Rapper Trina says in interviews that she lost a considerable amount of weight before her latest album was released by following a liquid cleanse diet. There are many variations on the liquid cleanse diet, but all are based on the Master Cleanse created by Stanley Burroughs in his book The Master Cleanser, published in 1976.

Theory

The liquid cleanse diet will help you lose weight. For 10 to 21 days, you consume nothing but water and a special lemonade. Proponents of the diet emphasize its ability to remove toxins and impurities from your body, but most people use it to lose weight quickly. It will help you lose weight, simply because you take in so few calories. There is very little scientific evidence to support the use of cleansing or detox diets. According to Mayo Clinic nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky, your liver and kidneys are naturally efficient at eliminating toxins without resorting to special diets.

Lemonade

The lemonade mixture called for by the liquid cleanse diet contains freshly squeezed lemon juice, cayenne pepper and grade B maple syrup. The acidity of the lemon juice encourages frequent bowel movements, which proponents of liquid cleansing claim is essential for eliminating toxins. The diet calls for drinking a minimum of eight to 12 glasses of this lemonade mixture daily. Any time you feel hungry, drink a glass of lemonade followed by 8 oz. filtered water.

Laxatives

The liquid cleanse diet calls for both herbal laxative teas and a salt water flush. Drinking a laxative tea in the evening encourages morning bowel movements. The salt water flush involves quickly drinking 2 tbsp. of sea salt dissolved in 1 l of filtered water. Once you have consumed this concoction, you will have a nearly immediate liquid bowel movement.

Warning

The liquid cleanse diet is a starvation diet. You take in so few calories that you will lose weight, but you will also deprive yourself of essential nutrients. You may also experience side effects such as headaches, nausea, diarrhea and fatigue. It may not do lasting harm over the course of a few weeks, but if followed for an extended period of time you will experience malnutrition.
