The size of the skateboard varies depending on the genre of riding. Wider boards offer stability while narrow models remain ideal for freestyle tricks. Skateboards with a medium width can adapt to most types of riding terrain. The 2011 Transworld Buyer's Guide states that skateboards have a width that varies between 7.5 and 8.25 inches. The skateboard commonly has a length of 30 to 32 inches. Perform a few basic measurements before choosing your skateboard.
Step 1
Extend the blade of the tape measure between the toe and heel of your skateboarding shoes. Write down this measurement for future reference. Choose a 7 to 7.5 inch wide skate deck if your shoes measured under 10 inches in length.
Step 2
Select a 7.6- to 8.25-inch wide skate deck if your shoes measured over 10 inches in length. Place the skateboard deck onto the floor. Align your feet over the holes that have been drilled through the top of the deck.
Step 3
Examine the board to ensure it meets your specification. Select a wider board for increased stability while skating on steeply inclined ramps. Pick a narrow board if you enjoy performing technical tricks on waxed ledges and manual pads.
Step 4
Choose a skateboard with a 30-inch length to decrease the overall weight. Opt for a longer board to avoid speed wobbles while bombing steep hills.
