Little League Baseball is a youth baseball organization that was founded in 1939 and now has more than 2.1 million youth baseball players, according to the Little League website. Little League Baseball is divided into seven age divisions with the most well known being the 12-year-old Little League Division. Little League has specific field standards for each division that include measurements to fences, bases and the pitcher's mound.
Bases
The distance between each base is 60 feet for all age groups below and including the 12-year-old Little League Division. However, the Little League website notes that local leagues can opt to use 50-foot bases in the tee ball divisions. For ages 13 and older, standard Little League rules use 90-foot bases, but again the Little League site notes that local leagues have the option of shortening bases to 75 feet for 13- to 14-year-old leagues.
Pitcher's Mound
The pitcher's mound for ages 12 and younger is 46 feet. The distance is measured from the back tip of home plate to the front edge of the pitching rubber. For ages 13 and older, the pitching mound distance is 60 feet and 6 inches, but the Little League website notes that local leagues have the option of shortening the mound to 54 feet for 13- and 14-year-old league play.
Outfield Fences
Distances to the outfield fences are measured from the back tip of home plate to the base of the fence. The Little League website notes that distances can be set by local leagues and Little League makes only recommendations for distances. For leagues from ages 12 and younger, the recommended fence distance, according to the Little League website, is a symmetrical 200 feet from all points. For ages 13 and older, the recommended fence distance is a symmetrical 300 feet, according to the Little League website.
Other Field Requirements
According to the Little League website, all Little League dugouts must be protected by a fence and or screen. In addition, if the field has lights, the Little League says that the lights must meet the League minimum standards for operation, height and brightness.
