Websites that will quickly certify you as a martial arts instructor are not difficult to find. These types of certifications are generally not respected or recognized by much of the martial arts community. The traditional method for earning an instructor certification is by dedicating yourself to years of hard work at a martial arts school. To correctly teach others, you need to completely understand the techniques of your particular martial art.

Step 1

Learn about different styles of martial arts. Visit various martial arts studios and watch classes. Take a class at studios that offer the first class free of charge. Research the martial arts on the internet. Visit your local library and pick up some books about the martial arts.

Step 2

Decide which style is the best fit for you. Consider a style like tae kwon do or tang soo do if you are interested in learning a lot of kicking techniques. Choose Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or judo if you are more interested in grappling on the ground. Pick kenpo, Krav Maga or Wing Chun to learn practical standup techniques for the street.

Step 3

Sign up for the class of your choice. Dedicate yourself to learning the curriculum that is taught in the class. Work hard in each class and let your effort be an example for other students. Ask questions if you don't understand certain techniques.

Step 4

Take notes after each class. Write down the names of techniques and brief explanations of how to properly execute these techniques. Use your notes to help you practice at home. Practice your techniques frequently throughout the week so that you get better at them and don't forget them.

Step 5

Be prepared for each rank test. Make sure you know what you will be tested on before each test. Try practicing some of your techniques in front of family members so that you are less nervous in front of test judges. Video record yourself performing techniques so that you can critique yourself.

Step 6

Set your sights on the next rank after passing each test. Do not get frustrated with the length of time it may take to achieve your martial arts goals. Use this time to refine your techniques. Challenge yourself to improve something about your martial arts skills during each class.

Step 7

Become an assistant instructor when you get to higher ranks like red belt or brown belt. Stand in front of the class and help your instructor teach other students. Try teaching some classes by yourself when your instructor says that you are ready to take this step.

Step 8

Test for black belt or the equivalent rank at your martial arts studio. Do not stop going to class after you have earned this prestigious rank. Continue to attend classes and learn advanced material.

Step 9

Talk to your instructor about any additional requirements that your organization may require before you are considered a certified instructor. Fulfill the amount of additional teaching or training hours that may be required. Attend teaching seminars, learn about marketing techniques and become more skilled at teaching children.

Step 10

Expect to be required to pass a background check and get a fingerprint-clearance card before becoming a certified instructor. Take CPR and first-aid classes to help prepare yourself for any emergencies that may occur in your classes.
