Weight gain and hair loss can be attributed to hormone imbalance. According to the MayoClinic website, higher than normal levels of testosterone contribute to male and female pattern baldness while your thyroid hormones are responsible for metabolic rate. Depending on your imbalance, hormones are effective at treating weight and hair problems.

Testosterone

Testosterone is the male hormone responsible for lean muscle mass formation and hair growth, particularly male body hair growth, according to the Bodybuilding website. Although a male hormone, testosterone is also produced in the ovaries of women in trace amounts. Too much testosterone leads to male and female pattern hair loss; however, normal production provides hair health as well as helps with weight loss capabilities. As lean muscle mass increases through exercise and testosterone production, more fat is burned with each workout.

Progesterone

Progesterone is a female hormone produced during pregnancy to support the uterus and fetal growth. When hormones are imbalanced, progesterone levels decrease as estrogen increases. This condition is called estrogen dominance according to Dr. John R. Lee, M.D. With estrogen dominance, weight gain and hair loss can occur. Progesterone, which is a steroidal hormone, prevents this when in perfect balance with estrogen. Use of progesterone creams or oral progesterone helps combat estrogen dominance, as well as polycystic ovary syndrome.

Thyroid

Your thyroid is responsible for the production of certain hormones required to metabolize energy and normal growth rates in teens. According to the KidsHealth website, iodine is needed to make the thyroid function efficiently. When iodine levels drop, your thyroid slows, causing a condition known as hypothyroidism. Two common symptoms of hypothyroidism include weight gain and hair loss. Managing hypothyroidism through diet, exercise and medications boosts thyroid hormone production.

Considerations

Hormone replacement therapies are used under medical supervision only. Never take hormone supplements or cream without first consulting your physician to determine the cause of your weight gain or hair loss. Heredity also contributes to both conditions and does not always point to hormone deficiency.
