Dry, itchy skin is uncomfortable, especially in cold, dry weather. Dry skin remedies come in many different forms, from laboratory-created lotions and ointments to all-natural creams and oils. Among the more esoteric dry skin treatments on the market are those containing emu oil. Emu oil moisturizers can be pricier than more common over-the counter lotions and creams, but whether or not they are worth the extra cost is a matter of personal preference.

Dry Skin Facts

Dry skin has many causes, from the lack of humidity in cold weather and artificially heated rooms, to harsh soaps and the chlorine, saltwater and sunlight your skin is exposed to during the summer. According to University Health Services at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, your skin's moisture comes from the water inside of it and the natural oils that protect it. Anything that washes away or dries up this oil and water can result in your skin becoming dry. Your skin produces less oil as you age, so that can also be a factor.

Emu Oil Facts

Emu oil comes from the fatty tissue on the backs of emus, which are native to Australia. They are a form of bird called ratites, and are the second largest birds in the world, after ostriches. According to PlanetOzKids.com, they can grow to be over 6 feet tall and weigh 130 lbs. Emu oil has been used by Australian Aborigines for centuries to heal wounds and treat scars.

Theory/Speculation

Emu oil is rich in emollients. Applying it to dry skin seals in your skin's natural oils and keeps it from drying out. Any oil, lotion or cream will have the same effect, simply by coating your skin. Manufacturers and distributors of emu oil products claim that it penetrates the top layer of your skin. This is certainly possible, because there are commercial moisturizers available that do the same thing.

Benefits

Emu oil moisturizers are an effective choice for someone who is allergic to or dislikes artificial chemicals and perfumes. Many emu oil moisturizers are made with all natural ingredients and scented with essential oils. Emu oil will help dry skin, but it is no more or less effective than any moisturizer.

Warning

If your skin is dry enough to crack or bleed, or itches enough to wake you at night, your dry skin may be a symptom of a more serious condition. Consult your doctor rather than trying to treat severe dry skin with emu oil.
