Football practice is a vital time for all players and coaches. When games are played at full speed and players are colliding with each other in a violent manner in games, it can be difficult to correct mistakes players are making. However, players can use a number of tools in practice to hone their skills and perfect their technique.

Tackling Dummy

Learning how to hit and tackle properly is essential when teaching football. Some players will be very aggressive and throw their shoulders at their opponents when tackling but won't wrap their arms when tackling while others need to get more aggressive with their hitting. The tackling dummy is usually a 6-foot high device that is about the same size as a player. After you hit the dummy and roll off of it, it pops back into place so there is limited downtime. That allows the next player to run and tackle the dummy within a few seconds of the previous play.

Blocking Sled

The blocking sled can accommodate anywhere from one to six players at a time. The key in successful blocking is getting leverage on the player you are trying to drive. The blocking sled allows the coach to get on the opposite side of the sled to observe the technique used by all the players. If the coach sees that a player is not getting low enough or not driving with his feet properly, the coach can get off the sled and make immediate corrections.

Juggs Machine

The Juggs Machine is used to help receivers and punt returners get used to catching passes and punts, respectively. To help receivers, the Juggs Machine will fire passes at a variety of speeds so the player can get used to catching the ball in his hands and not letting it get into his body. This will help receivers improve their technique without taking a toll on the quarterback's arm. Punts can also be difficult for return men to handle. By angling the Juggs Machine up in the air, a punt returner can get used to handling punts from a variety of angles and in several different weather situations as the season progresses.

Football Cutouts

This device is used by quarterbacks who want to improve their throwing accuracy. Football cutouts are plywood devices that are shaped like receivers. A hole is cut out in the upper body area and the quarterback is supposed to throw the ball through the cutout area. At some levels, the cutouts are placed on motorized carts so quarterbacks can practice hitting a moving target.
