Individual basketball point guard drills are designed to improve your dribbling as well as overall passing skills. While many point guard drills focus on passing and ball handling, some point guard drills will help you improve your scoring and jump shooting skills. Point guard drills range from court vision drills to outlet pass drills.
Up And Downs
This dribbling drill will help you improve your control of the ball while dribbling. Start by dribbling the ball at waist height, directly in front of your body. After several dribbles, start to bounce the ball higher and higher until the ball is being dribbled as high as you can without jumping. From here, start dribbling the ball lower and lower until you are dribbling on your knees, trying to dribble the ball as close to the floor as possible. Perform this drill with both hands individually before stopping.
Perimeter Shooting Drill
This shooting drill is designed to improve your perimeter shooting. Stand at the top of the key with a basketball in your hand. On your coach's whistle, dribble out to the left side of the three point line and down towards the baseline. Once you are 10 feet from the rim, stop your dribble and take a jump shot. Retrieve your own rebound and repeat from the other side of the court. Repeat this drill until fatigued.
Individual Passing Drill
This passing drill will help improve your chest passing without the aid of an additional teammate or partner. Grab a basketball and stand several feet from a concrete or solid wall. Start by bouncing a basic chest pass against the wall and trying to catch it in the same position you are throwing the pass in. As you improve, take a step or two away from the wall and continue to perform the pass. To vary your passes, try throwing behind the back passes and two-handed bounce passes against the wall to improve your accuracy and consistency with those types of passes.
Dribble Drive Drill
This dribbling drill will improve your ability to penetrate as well as your quickness on the court. Start by grabbing three cones and placing one at the top of the key, one at the left corner of the foul line and one two feet in front of the rim. On your coach's whistle, dribble from center court as quickly as you can toward the first cone at the top of the key. From this point, perform a crossover dribble from your right to left hand and continue towards the second cone. At this cone, perform another cross over, this time from your left hand to your right hand and dribble to the final cone. At this cone, perform a jump stop and shoot a two-foot jump shot. Retrieve your own rebound and repeat until fatigued.
