The Zumba craze is sweeping the nation, actually the world! Zumba is a Latin-inspired, dance-based cardio workout. When considering what shoes to wear to Zumba, keep in mind several things. The Zumba website recommends participants wear a cross training or aerobic shoe. In selecting the shoe, you should consider cushion, support, amount of traction, and weight of the shoe.
Cushion
It is important that the shoe you wear to Zumba is properly cushioned. Zumba is a high energy class that involves impact. Depending on the instructor and the participant, Zumba can range from low-impact to high-impact; however, even a low-impact workout requires some shock absorption. According to the American Council on Exercise, the more cushioning a shoe has, the more shock absorption the shoe will provide. Consider your own fitness level and the amount of cushion offered before choosing a shoe for Zumba.
Support
Any good footwear will provide support. But special report is needed because of the side-to-side movements in Zumba. The Zumba website recommends footwear that provides medial lateral support. Medial support refers to support on the inside of the foot; lateral support refers to the support offered to the outside of the foot. Firm support on both sides of the foot will help keep the foot from rolling and will ensure proper alignment of the foot.
Low Traction
Zumba involves a lot of sliding and turning, so a good Zumba shoe will be low traction without as much tread on the bottom. The heavier tread of a running shoe, for example, will grip the floor and inhibit your floating through the movements. Look for a shoe that is specially designed for dancers and has a low traction bottom that will slide and spin more easily.
Lightweight
The final consideration when choosing a shoe for Zumba class is weight. A lightweight shoe will allow more freedom to your movements than a clunky heavier shoe will. Search for an athletic shoe that is specifically designed for dancers. Dance shoes will be very light and allow you to spin, kick, leap and glide through your Zumba class.
