Getting a brand new baseball glove can be fun, but when you go to use it, you might be disappointed. After all, a new baseball glove doesn't hold onto the ball very well, making proper catching impossible. Likewise, the leather is so stiff, it can be uncomfortable to wear. Thankfully, the process of breaking in a new glove is simple. It just takes some time.
Step 1
Place your new baseball glove in the sun during the day. The heat will soften the leather and make it easier to wear and break in.
Step 2
Play catch with your new glove. The impact of a baseball hitting the glove will break down the leather and make it more supple. Play catch as often as possible with a friend to break in your glove faster.
Step 3
Apply a glove conditioner to a rag and rub into the glove. The conditioner should completely rub into the glove's surface and not leave too much of a residue behind. Pre-made glove conditioners are available, including Rawlings Gloveolium, but you can even use shaving cream to soften the leather.
Step 4
Store your glove with a baseball in the webbing. Wrap the glove in a piece of cloth tightly to force the glove to mold itself around the ball. Over time, this will make the glove take on the shape of the ball and allow for easier catching.
