Being overweight puts you in the high risk category of suffering from diseases such as stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and respiratory disorders, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC. Obesity is a common problem among many individuals, with more than 60 percent of American adults being obese. Certain foods can help burn fat, but the most beneficial way to lose weight is through healthy diet and exercise every day.

Fruits

Citrus fruits such as oranges, limes, tomatoes, grapefruit and papaya are all rich in vitamin C and contain fat burning properties, according to Fat Free Kitchen. Vitamin C assists in helping the body to process fat more quickly and stimulates the production of the amino acid L-carnitine, which is responsible for speeding up your fat burning capacity. In addition, vitamin C also keeps your metabolism healthy and strong.

Chillies/Peppers

According to Fat Free Kitchen, foods that contain cayenne pepper or chillies are effective in reducing body fat. Chillies contain capsaicin, which helps to increase your metabolism's ability to break down food and to boost heart rate, both of which help burn fat. Peppers such as jalapenos or habaneros can also be used to help burn fat, as they also contain capsaicin.

Foods Rich in Calcium

Calcium acts as a metabolic trigger, which helps burn off body fat. Most dairy products are high in calcium, including milk, cheese and margarine. Calcium helps to reduce body fat by boosting metabolism, according to the "New York Daily News." Dairy is also high in complex carbs, which help to increase your metabolism by keeping your insulin levels low after a meal. High insulin levels allow your body to store fat.

Whole Grains

Whole grain foods are a rich source of complex carbs, which help burn off body fat by keeping your insulin levels low. According to the "New York Daily News," whole grain cereal is one of the best whole grain foods to eat, though it is beneficial to keep away from white breads and cereal.
