Cancer is a group of diseases that share the same characteristic -- abnormal growth of malignant cells that may spread to distant parts of the body. Cancer has many causes, including inherited genes; external factors such as smoking, viruses, radiation and toxin exposure; and internal causes such as mutations and malfunctions of the immune system. Many treatments help cancer patients, and the survival rate is improving for several types of cancer. A number of natural supplements are also available that may support the immune system and help prevent or speed recovery from cancer. Consult your doctor to determine whether adding supplements to your regimen is a good strategy for you.

Astragalus Root

Astragalus root, also called huang chi, is an herbal preparation used in Chinese medicine to support the immune system. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, or MSKCC, states that it increases the activity of several compounds produced by immune cells and enhances the activity of other immune cells called natural killer cells. A number of Chinese clinical trials support its use as an anti-cancer and immuno-supportive treatment, although more study is still needed. MSKCC states that astragalus is safe and generally risk-free. It is available from health food or Asian stores as a powder or in capsules and may be taken several times daily. Get your doctor's OK before taking astragalus supplements.

Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng, or eleuthero, is an herb used traditionally to boost the immune system. Its active ingredients include compounds that bind to hormonal receptors and stimulate production of immune cells, potentially boosting the body's natural cancer-fighting system. Siberian ginseng is available as a powder or in capsule form. A purified eleuthero extract is also available under the brand name Eleu-Kokk. The herb or the extract may be consumed daily. However, it may cause several side effects including drowsiness and low blood sugar, and it may interact with some prescription drugs. Discuss with your doctor whether Siberian ginseng is a good choice for you before adding it to your regimen.

Triphala

Triphala is an herbal preparation commonly used in traditional Indian medicine, or Ayurveda. It is a mixture of powdered fruits of three plants: amla, myrobalan and belleric myrobalan. Triphala has antioxidant qualities and also acts on the immune system and other organs. It contains active compounds called polyphenols and flavonoids, which may account for its immune functions, according to MSKCC. It may also act on certain cancer cells, including those from breast and pancreatic cancers, to induce their death. Triphala is available at most health food stores and may be consumed daily. It is considered safe but may cause mild gastrointestinal upset or diarrhea. Check with your doctor to make sure that it is safe for you to take triphala supplements.
