5 Things You Need to Know About Cabbage Soup Diet

1. Tasty and Low-cal

There are many variations on the cabbage soup recipe, but the basics are the same. Tweak the recipe according to taste, but use about a half a head of cabbage, two carrots, mushrooms, several celery sticks, a bunch of green onions, two green peppers and two cans of diced tomatoes. Add about six cups of water and boil for several hours until the vegetables are soft. Use a package of onion soup mix, beef or chicken bouillon cubes, salt, pepper, garlic or any other spices to flavor the cabbage soup.

2. Follow the Seven-Day Plan

Eat as much cabbage soup as you'd like all week. On the first day of the diet, eat only fruit except bananas. On the second day, eat only vegetables. On the third day, eat fruits and vegetables. On the fourth day, eat up to eight bananas and drink two glasses of skim milk. On the fifth day, eat up to twenty ounces of beef, chicken or fish and up to six tomatoes. On day six, eat steak and unlimited vegetables. On the last day, eat two cups of brown rice and unlimited vegetables.

3. Don't Forget Supplements

A cabbage soup diet is very lacking in essential vitamins and nutrients. Take a multivitamin everyday you are on the diet to supplement your nutritional needs. A multivitamin doesn't work against the diet at all. If you don't take them, you will find yourself very drained and tired, not able to concentrate and possibly light-headed.

4. The Awful Truth

You can lose up to ten pounds in one short week on a cabbage soup diet, but since it's mostly water weight, it will most likely be short-term weight loss. It is not a good solution to for weight loss for over the long haul. The bright side of this diet is it makes you eat many vegetables and gives you a boost to start a healthy eating plan. It will also shrink your stomach, and make cutting back on food for the long term much easier. The reality of the cabbage soup diet is that you will gain the weight back quickly even if you continue on a different diet, which can lead to diet discouragement.

5. Combine Soup With Long-Term Plan

For slower but more permanent results, try making the cabbage soup and eating it several times a week. It has almost no calories and is a great way to get your daily veggie intake. Eat healthy dinners of fish, chicken, long grain rice and vegetables each night, but don't limit yourself completely. Drink eight glasses of water a day, and start an exercise routine. True weight loss will come from lifestyle changes.
