Vitamin B-12 is a water soluble vitamin that is important for DNA synthesis, formation of red blood cells and the maintenance of healthy nerve cells. Vitamin B-12 is also necessary for metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in order to produce energy. Some patients may experience serious adverse reactions after taking vitamin B-12.

Immunological Effects

Patients allergic to cobalamin, cobalt or any other products in vitamin B-12 pills and injections may experience serious allergic reactions. Symptoms of allergic reactions include hives, rashes, itching, wheezing, chest tightness, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, eyelids and tongue, according to MedlinePlus. Patients who experience these symptoms after taking B-12 should seek immediate medical attention.

Cardiovascular Effects

Patients who receive vitamin B-12 injections may experience several cardiovascular effects. Vitamin B-12 may cause heart failure, which failure of the heart to pump properly leading to reduced flow of blood to tissues., according to Drugs.com. Symptoms of heart failure include problems breathing due to accumulation of fluids in the lungs, edema of the ankles and feet, sudden weight gain

Hematological Effects

Treatments with B-12 vitamin may cause abnormal production of red blood cells and an increase in blood volume, a condition known as polythemia vera according to Drugs.com. Symptoms of polycthemia vera include red colored face, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties especially when lying down.

Gastrointestinal Effects

Effects may also cause upset stomach, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea and vomiting, according to Drugs.com. Patients who experience severe upset stomach should stop taking B12 and seek medical attention.
