Beginning yoga is an excellent way to improve your mental and physical health. Yoga helps build awareness of your body and focuses your mind. It also reduces stress and improves physical fitness. Most people can safely start a beginner's yoga routine because of the low-impact nature of the exercise. However, always consult a physician before starting a new exercise regimen, primarily if you have existing health conditions.

Yoga Attire

Special gear is not necessarily a requirement for yoga. However, loose-fitting or stretchy clothing is recommended. Sweat clothes, shorts or leotards are ideal for yoga because they allow you to move freely without catching on your clothing. According to the ABC of Yoga website, the exercises are traditionally done barefoot, but you may also wear socks or soft shoes.

Yoga Tools

Yoga tools and props are not required for proper yoga practice, but they can help you achieve proper yoga form. A yoga mat helps cushion you, making it more comfortable to do poses on the floor. A blanket or towel can be used in place of a mat, but these do not provide the same non-slip surface as a yoga mat. In addition, yoga straps and blocks can also be purchased to help you achieve proper yoga form. These tools can also be found at many retailers in a complete yoga prop kit.

Yoga Classes

Yoga classes are widely offered in many cities. Your local fitness center may offer yoga classes of varying levels, but they may require that you sign up for a gym membership in order to attend classes. Other places that may offer yoga classes include your local YMCA, community colleges, adult education centers and hospitals. Beginning your yoga training with a yoga class helps ensure that you will learn proper form at a pace designed for beginners.

Getting Started

Whether or not you use props or learn yoga in a class or on your own, you will want to start slowly. Starting with 15 minutes of poses and 15 minutes of concentrated breathing daily will bring about benefits without putting too much stress on your body too quickly, notes the ABC of Yoga website. If you're considering starting a yoga class, speak to the instructor beforehand about any specific concerns you have. Finally, expect a challenge and have patience with the yoga poses and stretches. They will become easier with practice.
