Phentermine, a prescription weight loss medication, is approved for short-term use of up to 12 weeks by adults. It is approved for use by people who have a body mass index of 30 or more who are otherwise healthy or by people who have a body mass index of 27 or more who have obesity-related medical conditions. Following a healthy diet and exercising regularly are necessary to maximize the success of dieting with phentermine.
Step 1
Eat a low-fat, low-calorie diet. When prescribing phentermine, your doctor will tell you how many grams of fat and how many calories per day you are allowed and you must stay within the limits set so you can lose weight. Be sure that your daily diet includes lean proteins, vegetables, whole grains, fruits and low fat dairy, as well as a very small amount -- about a teaspoon -- of healthy fat or oil, such as canola oil.
Step 2
Remember to take your phentermine pill at least 30 minutes before you eat breakfast. If you are on the extended release form, or once daily form, this is the only pill you will take. If you take phentermine two times per day, take one pill at least 30 minutes before dinner. If you take your pill three times per day, you will also take one pill at least 30 minutes before lunch. Your last pill should be taken no later than 6 p.m. to reduce the risk of insomnia, notes Drugs.com.
Step 3
Exercise daily. Swimming, water aerobics, yoga and walking are some options for daily exercise. Your doctor will give you a daily goal for your exercise program -- generally this goal will be at least 30 minutes or as high as 90 minutes. You can break up your exercise into 10 minute segments throughout the day if necessary. When you work out, you want your heart rate to increase slightly and you should sweat; however, you should still be able to hold a conversation without getting breathless.
Step 4
Follow up with your doctor on a regular basis so he can monitor your weight loss and vital signs. Increased blood pressure and increased heart rate are some common side effects of phentermine, so your doctor will keep a close eye on these while you are taking the drug.
