Better Made Snack Foods Inc. is a Detroit based company founded in 1930. It prefers to use locally grown potatoes and use trans fat-free cottonseed or palm oil. Traditionally, regular and barbecue varieties tend to be the most popular. In addition to salt, its barbecue chips also contain sugar, tomato powder, monosodium glutamate, or MSG, onion powder, garlic powder, canola oil, turmeric, annatto and paprika extract for color, citric acid, maltodextrin, natural smoke flavor, and anti-caking agents: tricalcium phosphate and silicon dioxide.

Calories

Total calories in a 1 oz. serving of regular, Better Made potato chips equals 160 calories. Total calories from the barbecue variety equals 150. A 1 oz serving is approximately 17 regular sized chips.

Fat and Cholesterol

Out of 160 total calories per serving in the regular flavored chips, 100 calories or 63 percent are coming from fat. There are 11 g of fat per serving, 3 g coming from saturated sources. The barbecue flavored chips contain 53 percent fat per serving or 9 g. Considering the company prefers to use trans fat-free based oils, there is no trans fat content. The chips do not contain any animal based ingredients, so there is zero cholesterol content.

Salt

The salt content in a serving of Better Made regular flavored chips equals 170 mg. The salt content for the barbecue flavored chips equals 200 mg. That's approximately 10 perceent of the recommended serving of salt per day.

Carbohydrates

Better Made regular flavored chips contain 15 g of carbohydrate with 1 g of fiber per serving and 0 g of sugar. The barbecue style chips contain 14 g of carbohydrate with 1 g of fiber and 1 g of sugar.

Protein

White potatoes contain a significant amount of vitamin C and both the regular and barbecue flavored chips contain approximately 15 percent of RDA for vitamin C per serving, based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet. There is also a small amount of the mineral iron; 2 percent of RDA per serving based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet.

Other Points to Consider

Frequently, potato chips are eaten with a sour cream based dip that will provide more calories, fat, sodium, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals. Being that sour cream is a dairy product, cholesterol will also be present. These points should be taken into consideration while planning your daily food intake.
