The jump shot is one of the most common types of shots in basketball. Whether you're shooting a mid-range jump shot or a 3-pointer, having the proper form is essential to making sure the ball gets into the hoop. Once you've mastered the art of the jump shot, you'll be able to move on to more challenging shots and other aspects of your game.
Step 1
Stand with your feet spread shoulder-width apart and pointing at the basketball goal. Hold the ball in both hands. The ball should be resting in your shooting hand on the pads of your fingers, with your other hand resting on the side of the ball to support it. Align your fingers on your shooting hand so they're parallel with the panels on the basketball to help assure proper spin.
Step 2
Bend your knees, jump in the air and bring the ball up to eye level. Keep your shoulders square and your body facing the basket. Keep your eyes focused on the basket.
Step 3
Retain your balance as you jump, going straight up in the air without leaning to the side or to the front or back to assure your shot stays on line.
Step 4
Lift the ball slightly above your head just before the highest point of your jump. Pull your non-shooting hand away from the ball. At the same time, push the ball toward the goal with your shooting hand, keeping your elbow under the ball. Flick your shooting wrist to put backspin on the ball.
Step 5
Land on both feet and execute a proper follow-through by keeping your shooting hand in the air with your wrist cocked until the ball either goes through the basket or comes off for a rebound. Your shooting arm should be pointing toward the basket on the follow-through. Land in the same spot from which you jumped to assure proper balance.
