Psyllium is an annual cultivated in Asia, Europe and North Africa, and the husks of psyllium often are grounded to powder and used to relieve constipation, diarrhea and hemorrhoids. Psyllium husks' key property is its mucilage, which soothes and relieves the digestive and respiratory tracts. Although there is little data on the use of psyllium husks while breastfeeding, it is generally considered safe to use. You can take psyllium husks normally without any modifications, but consult with your doctor before taking any supplement or medication.

Step 1

Pour 8 to 12 oz. of water or juice into a glass. Add 1 tbsp. of psyllium husk powder.

Step 2

Stir the mixture quickly with a spoon until it is fully dissolved.

Step 3

Drink the mixture immediately. If left to stand, the mixture could become too thick to swallow. You can take up to three servings a day.

Step 4

Drink eight to 10 glasses of water throughout the day when taking psyllium husks to prevent blockages in your intestines, since psyllium expands and thickens rapidly.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use psyllium husks gradually so that your body can adjust to the substantial increase in the level of fiber.
  • Psyllium can cause side effects including stomach pain, skin rash, itching, breathing difficulties and vomiting. Discontinue use if you experience any side effects and contact your doctor.
