The hand is the most important tool in the sport of boxing and should be well protected during matches as well as training sessions with the aid of hand wraps and training gloves. The best training gloves are easy for the user to put on, durable, and provide wrist support and cushion the hand allowing a boxer to avoid injury.
Sizes
Boxing gloves come in a variety of sizes and weights for men and women. The size will be dependent on the size of your hand, and small, medium and large sizes are available. Typically, most men will use a large glove and most women can fit the medium, with the small used for children. Training gloves range in weight from 12 to 16 oz. with most trainers recommending the 16 oz. glove for all general training purposes.
Closures
Laces and a Velcro are the two types of closures on most training gloves. The laced variety used has a longer cuff and allows the users to pull the gloves tighter to the forearm. Gloves with Velcro closures are the most common type used due to the fact you can easily put on and remove the glove by yourself.
Ventilation
Glove odor is common with frequent usage of boxing gloves. Today more gloves are being manufactured that have built-in features to help ventilate gloves and keep them from developing odors. These gloves are lined with fabric that dries quickly and the palms may have ventilation holes. You can apply sprays and cedar chip pouches to the interior of the gloves after use as well to help prevent odor.
Tips
If you can hold the end of the Velcro strap with your chin and roll your wrist up, your chest will be able to put on a Velcro glove by yourself. Finish by smoothing the end of the Velcro with your chest, back or other arm. Let your gloves air out after using them, leave the Velcro unfastened and open or flip the wrist portion inside out. Wash your hand wraps frequently as they contribute to the musty odor.
