The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest that as many as 72 million Americans in the United States could be considered obese. With such a large percentage of the population dealing with weight issues, the market has become flooded with products aimed at helping you lose weight. Luckily, just a few easy tools can help simplify your weight-loss process without having to sort through the thousands of options available to you on the market.

Calorie Guide

Calorie guides are an essential tool when it comes to keeping track of what you eat in order to lose weight. A calorie guide tells you the amount of calories per serving of thousands of different common foods, which you can then tally during the day as you eat. Some of the more comprehensive calorie guides can be found online for free, such as My Daily Plate. If eating out, you'll find that many restaurants provide their calorie information on their websites, which can be helpful to look at for planning what you want to eat before you even set foot in the restaurant.

Journal

A journal is a tool that can be used in several ways during your weight-loss process. For example, writing down what you eat during the day, along with the corresponding calories from your calorie guide, can help you better keep track of what exactly you're eating on a daily basis. Along with tracking your calories, keep track of days where you slip up with your diet and write a short sentence or two on what was going on when it happened or how you were feeling. This information can help you recognize patterns and change habits to keep slips from occurring in the future.

Aerobic Equipment

Aerobic equipment increases your heart rate and is essential for burning the calories needed to lose weight. Effective aerobic tools can be as cheap as a simple jump rope or can be more expensive, such as a home elliptical trainer, treadmill or stair stepper. Whatever you choose to use, the most important factor is increasing your heart rate and getting the blood pumping in order to use energy and burn calories.

Strength-Training Equipment

Strength-training equipment make up another set of tools that are an integral part of weight-loss success. Strength training builds muscles, increases endurance and provides support to your core body structure as you continue to lose weight. Strength training also impacts bone strength, which can help stave off diseases such as osteoporosis, states MayoClinic.com. Simple and cheap strength-training tools like dumbbells, kettle balls or pull-up bars can be purchased from most sporting goods or big box stores, or you can make your own weights from items around your home such as milk cartons or buckets filled with water.

DVDs and Video Games

If you typically get bored while working out during your weight-loss process, two tools you may want to try are exercise DVDs or video games. Exercise DVDs come in a wide range of options from relaxing yoga and stretching to intense workouts such as the popular P90X series. Other options include dance aerobics which use hip-hop, salsa or even country line dancing to help you lose weight. Video games are a newer addition to the market with many of the consoles providing interactive games as well as exercises and fitness routines that are specifically designed to help you get active and lose weight while having fun at the same time.

Scale

A scale is an essential tool in helping you lose weight. Scales allow you to track your progress, but keep in mind that you weight can fluctuate substantially during the day. Thus, getting on and off the scale several times a day may become counter-productive or discouraging. Instead, weigh yourself once a week or every few days to ensure that the life changes you are making are resulting in weight loss.
