Like other forms of ballroom dancing, Latin dance has gained recognition and momentum, as well as a devoted fan base, with the help of adored television dance shows, such as "So You Think You Can Dance." Aerobic Latin dance crazes such as Zumba have helped Latin-based dance gain impetus also. Salsa is a Latin dance recognized, performed and admired worldwide, and fans love to learn the sassy and sometimes sultry steps. It's also a fun way to work out and burn calories. You don't need a Zumba class or formal dance training to get Salsa-style exercise though. Work out anywhere to Salsa music by performing a few basic steps.

Step 1

Become familiar with basic Salsa steps. Watch free videos online, such as "Learn to Dance Salsa Basic Steps for Beginners" and see how basic Salsa steps are put together; follow along until you're ready to learn and practice the moves on your own.

Step 2

Learn and practice the basic "On 1" Salsa step. The beginning basic step involves stepping forward, then backward repeatedly with alternating feet. Count to eight and step forward with steps one through three and step backward with steps five through seven; steps four and eight are pauses, says Addicted2Salsa.com.

Step 3

Step forward with your left foot and slightly shift your weight to it on count "one" while keeping your right foot directly under you. Then shift your weight on to your right foot on count "two." Align both feet and step with your left foot on count "three." Pause on count "four." Step back with your right foot and slightly shift your weight to it on count "five" while keeping your left foot directly under you. Shift your weight to your left foot on count "six." Align both feet again and step with your right foot on count "seven." Pause on count "eight."

Step 4

Listen to the beats of the Salsa music to help you with your "On1" counts and steps. Notice the first harder beat in a Salsa song typically coincides with count "one," Addicted2Salsa.com (see ref # 1) points out.

Step 5

Add more spice to your basic Salsa "On 1" step by including a turn with steps one through three. Step forward and shift your weight as usual with your left foot on count one, but as you shift your weight to your right foot underneath you, begin turning toward the back with both feet on count two. Complete the turn and face forward again on count three. Pause on count four. Don't turn when performing the back steps for counts five through seven. Pause on count eight.

Step 6

Include basic Salsa steps to the sides instead of to the front and back to add flavor and variety to your workout to Salsa Music, and then alternate between moving forward and backward for eight beats and to the sides for eight beats for more of a challenge. Salsa forward and backward and to the right and the left, and then spin for a complete 24-beat routine.
