Premenopause precedes the onset of menopause and generally occurs after age 40, specifically 45, according to Ian Milsom in the book "Contraception and Family Planning." This transitory period is characterized by a progressive loss of ovarian function with or without dysfunctional uterine bleeding, the author notes. Common symptoms include hot flashes, weight gain, vaginal dryness, anxiety, irritability and depression. If you're premenopausal, you may benefit from taking certain vitamins.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that's present as a supplement, as well as in vegetable oils, seeds, nuts and dark green leafy vegetables. This vitamin helps relieve symptoms of hot flashes, sore breasts and vaginal dryness, according to Nisha Jackson in the book "Hormone Survival Guide for Perimenopause." To relieve dryness, apply vitamin E topically, the author says; for hot flashes and night sweats, take it orally. Typical daily dosage is 200IU to 400IU, Jackson says.

Vitamin B6

In the book "A Woman's Guide to Menopause and Perimenopause," authors Mary Minkin and Carol Wright say that regularly taking vitamin B6 can reduce PMS symptoms of breast discomfort, weight gain, irritability and anxiety 60 percent to 70 percent. As a natural diuretic, this vitamin helps reduce bloating while interfering with prolactin, a hormone that may be involved in PMS, although further research is warranted.

Vitamin D

Premenopausal women are at a greater risk of osteoporosis due to bone mineral density deterioration, according to Lissa Zala et al., in the book "Transitions Through the Perimenopausal Years." Vitamin D is a necessary compound in the absorption of calcium -- the mineral that makes up bone. The daily recommended amount of vitamin D for females between 14 to 50 is 5mcg per day, which rises to 10mcg per day at 51, according to MedlinePlus.
