The ability to manage food cravings is an important component of many weight loss programs. Complementary and alternative practitioners sometimes suggest obesity is a sign of an imbalance in the body. One theory, known as metabolic typing, suggests an imbalance of carbohydrates with proteins can upset your insulin levels and cause you to crave sugar. Acupressure is frequently described as acupuncture without needles, and while Western science continues to investigate the validity of the practice, the stimulation and sedation of the body's energy system has been a component of healing practices for thousands of years.
Step 1
Massage your ears by applying gentle pressure and tracing along and within the auricle with your ring finger. Place the index and middle finger of each hand on your temples and gradually trace behind your ears, down to the bottom of earlobe. Press gently for 30 seconds.
Step 2
Study the art of G-Jo and locate the acupressure points that help to control food cravings. Place the tip of your thumb -- use the knuckle if you have long fingernails -- and press deeply into the flesh until you locate a sensitive, or sore spot. Continue to place pressure on the spot and massage for 15 or 20 seconds.
Step 3
Pinch the cleft between your upper lip and nose between your index finger and thumb. Hold for two minutes. Close your eyes and imagine you no longer crave carbohydrates.
Step 4
Place your three middle fingers near your left temple. State "I no longer crave carbohydrates" as you apply gradual, even pressure to the left side of your skull and trace your fingers behind your ear down to the ear lobe.
Step 5
Refer to an acupressure point map and locate the appetite control point on the outside of the ear. Place your index finger on the protrusion just above the ear lobe and press gently for three minutes.
Tips and Warnings
- If you experience frequent cravings for carbohydrates, you can ease the craving by making certain you eat a variety of healthy foods each day. Keep in mind the ability to manage your cravings for carbohydrates does not guarantee you will lose weight.
- Do not use acupressure to reduce legitimate hunger cravings. If you are pregnant, you should avoid using acupressure techniques without the approval of your doctor.
