In epilepsy, brain cells create excess electricity, causing seizures. It strikes at least one in 100 people in the United States, according to NetWellness, a non-profit consumer health website. Epilepsy can occur at any age, although it's more common in elderly persons. Many kinds of herbs are used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat epilepsy; however, it's important to check with your doctor before you consider taking herbs.

Bacopa

The anti-epileptic property of the leaf extract of Bacopa monnieri is attributed to saponin compounds found in the herb. They increase the activity of two major brain chemicals, serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid, which are thought to reduce calcium current in pyramidal and interneurons that trigger epileptic seizures, according to the University of Michigan Health System website.

Valerian

Valerian root, an anticonvulsant, has long been used for treating epilepsy. The active compounds of valerian may work in diseases such as epilepsy by sedating the central nervous system, according to a 2004 study published in the journal "Epilepsia", which was conducted by M.J. Eadie of the Department of Medicine at the University of Queensland in Australia.

Aloe Vera

The ameliorative effect of aloe vera, a succulent plant chiefly of southern Africa, against epilepsy is attributed to a diverse group of chemicals found in the herb, including polysaccharides, according to a 2009 study conducted by Rodriguez-Fragoso and colleagues, which was published in the journal "Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology".
