The type of climbing shoe that's right for you will depend on the type of climbing you want to do. Gym climbing or outdoor climbing require certain types of shoes, and your ability level and the terrain of the mountains you climb also determine the type of shoe you need. Many seasoned rock climbers have multiple pairs of climbing shoes, says REI.com, but it is important to know which shoes work best in which situations.
All-Around Climbing Shoes
Traditional rock climbing shoes are also known as all-around rock climbing shoes. These shoes are designed to adapt to all different kinds of rock climbing, and are a good shoe for the beginner climber. Acme Climbing states these climbing shoes usually have a stiff sole to support the foot on a small hold, a symmetrical toe box, laces that extend to the toes and a relaxed heel rand. Some all-around climbing shoes have hook and loop straps but have the stiffness that shoes in this category typically have. REI.com adds that the sole is typically made of thick rubber.
Bouldering Shoes
Bouldering shoes have an asymmetrical toe box that helps add power to the big toe, says Acme Climbing. Some shoes have a turned-down toe or sole designed for the same purpose. The soles of these shoes are usually thinner and softer than other styles for increased sensitivity and feel, and the midsole is also soft, according to REI.com. Acme Climbing states that the main purpose of bouldering shoes is to maximize edging on small or thin foot holds. They may have laces or hook-and-loop straps.
Steep Faces and Crack Climbing
Rock climbing shoes in the steep face category typically have a medium to snug toe fit, a relaxed heel rand, and a midsole that's a mixture of stiffness and flexibility for edging and smearing, says REI.com. The toes of the shoe may be curled, but other steep face shoes have pointy toe boxes. Crack climbing shoes have a flat-toed fit, a narrow toe profile, an upper made from durable materials and a stiff midsole, says REI.com.
Women's and Children's Climbing Shoes
Women's climbing shoes do not necessarily have to be for women. REI.com states that these climbing shoes usually have a lower ankle cut and a smaller heel base, and perhaps a longer toe bed. Some men with low-volume feet find these climbing shoes to be a good fit, says REI.com. Children's climbing shoes usually have hook-and-loop closures, and the shoes can be bought a size too big since children are usually more comfortable in a more relaxed fit.
