According to registered dietitian Dr. Susan Mitchell, fruits rich in vitamin C are a must-have when you have a cold. So are hot liquids that can help you drain mucous and breathe better. In most cases, there are no forbidden foods for people with a cold. Making healthy choices, however, can help your body recover faster and more effectively.
Irritating Foods
If you have a stuffed nose and want to open up your sinuses, spicy food might help, as long as you don't mind the runny nose that comes with it. The problem with spicy foods is that they contain strong condiments or spices that can irritate your throat and worsen the symptoms of the cold. For example, foods containing capsin, such as chilis, can cause your nose to water and your throat to itch, two things you don't want to experience when you have a cold. If eating Mexican or Thai food, ask for mild sauces. Other spices to avoid include wasabi, hot sauce and spicy mustard.
Junk Foods
Junk food is never a good idea, but this is especially true when you're sick. According to holistic health counselor Irina Wardas, certain foods put stress on your system, making it hard to get better and overcome a cold. Sugars, refined carbs, fried foods and artificial sweeteners all take a toll on your body and your health. They also affect your energy levels, as sugars cause a peak of energy, followed by a rapid fall. Instead, focus on healthy, wholesome foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains, which provide nutrition and a steady source of energy.
Dairy Products
According to MayoClinic.com, it's a myth that milk causes phlegm to form. However, dairy can thicken phlegm already present, making you feel more uncomfortable and irritating your throat. If you have a cold with a cough, avoid milk. The exception might be yogurt. According to Dr. Mitchell, it provides healthy bacteria that can help strengthen your immune system and help speed up recovery.
Very Cold Foods
If you have a sore throat or a raspy voice, drinking or eating very cold foods like ice cream can make things much worse. This is why chicken soup, tea and other hot drinks are usually recommended to fight a cold: the vapor from the liquid helps open up your sinuses and can help thin out mucus buildup.
