Clipless pedals sound almost contradictory to what they are actually doing. The word clipless refers to the lack of a toe clip, or cage, that goes around your shoe. Clipless pedals work with a cleat attachment that secures to the bottom of a mountain bike shoe. The cleat clips into the pedal and the rider and bicycle become one.

Function

If you are a mountain biker, you must be one with the dirt. However, you also want your gear to work, even when dirty. Pedals are no exception. When choosing a clipless pedal, you should look for one that allows you to easily clip in and out, even on the wettest, muddiest trails. The function of the clipless pedal should leave you feeling secure and, if necessary, able to clip and unclip your shoe. Another consideration is the angle of the pedal. Some pedals and cleats have their own set-ups, which may or may not work with your anatomy.

Time ATAC Pedals

The Time ATAC pedals are rugged, tough pedals that will take a beating. The portion of the pedal where your shoes clip is made of steel. There is also a mechanism that allows you to increase or decrease tension of the pedal based on comfort. Float, or how much play the shoe has while clipped to the pedal, is also adjustable. The pedals have efficient mud-clearing capability. You can clip on either side of the pedal.

Crank Brothers Candy C Pedals

These pedals make it easy to shed mud. The egg-beater design allows for multiple points of entry as well as minimal mud buildup. This pedal is also lightweight. It's made of a fiber composite that equals 308 g for the set. But you shouldn't worry that this pedal is not durable. Even though it is light, the clip is made of carbon steel and should be able to handle all conditions.

Considerations

Your ability must be factored into all decisions on clipless pedals. Are you a novice mountain bike rider or have you been hitting the single track for years? If you are new to mountain biking and clipless pedals, you may want to start with an easy-to-use pedal, one that makes you feel safe and comfortable, so if you need to unclip, you easily can. The Time and Crank Brothers pedals have ease of entry and exit, along with the ability to increase or decrease tension. Visit your local bike shop to get a better idea of which clipless pedals work best for you.
