Shin guards are a necessary component of the uniform for soccer. Epic Sports points out that all shin guards must be approved by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment and worn under socks. Even if you're new to the game and haven't used shin guards before, the steps to putting on soccer chin guards are fairly easy. Just ensure that you have the right fit and examine the fastening system to ensure that you're using and wearing the shin guards properly for the highest degree of safety.

Remove Footwear

Because your shin guards need to be worn closely against the skin and under your uniform components, you must first remove your shoes and socks before you put your shin guards on. Then, examine the shin guard for clues on how it's meant to fit. Some shin guards simple use a Velcro strap system across the back off the guard to be fastened around your calf, while others have a flexible sleeve that fits over the foot first, then fastens around the calf.

Fit the Guard

Place the guard over your shin if you are using a Velcro strap system only. Or, if you have a foot sleeve, stretch the mouth of the sleeve open and slide it over your foot, positioning your heel in the small hole at the bottom of the sleeve. To ensure that you have the right fit, check to see that your shin is protected from above the ankle bone to about two or three inches below the knee, suggests Academy Sports. If your shin guards are too high and are exposed, you'll be violating uniform guidelines. If they are too short, you won't get the proper protection.

Fasten the Guard

You'll need to fasten the supplied straps to ensure that your shin guards stay put during game play. All shin guards, regardless of whether they have the sleeves or not, use straps around the back to get a custom fit. Feed the strap through the loop buckle on the other side of the guard by pulling the strap around the back of your calf. Then, press the strap back on itself to fasten. Stand up and check that you have a comfortable fit. The guards should be snug enough to stay stationary, but not so tight that they cut off circulation or inhibit movement.

Redress

Once your shin guards are securely fastened, roll the top of your socks and pull them over your shin guards. Take care to keep the shin guards in place as you pull your socks over. Then, lace up your shoes to complete your lower body uniform.
