An ear infection is an inflammation in the middle ear caused by certain microorganisms and bacteria, as described by the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. With ear infection, fluid and mucus builds up behind the eardrum causing hearing difficulties. Ear infection, or otitis media, is more common in babies and children compared to adults. Signs of ear infection include fluid drainage, fussiness, ear pain and fever. Ear infections resolve on their own, medications can be given to manage pain. There are several supplements that may prevent ear infection. Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements that affect your ears.

Zinc

Zinc is one of the supplements that can help prevent ear infection. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, zinc is a nutrient found throughout the cells in the body that aids the immune system in fighting opportunistic bacteria and viruses. The body's immune system needs zinc in order to function properly. Children and older adults who have low levels of zinc are prone to getting certain infections such as pneumonia and ear infection. Food products that contain sufficient amounts of zinc include oysters, seafood, red meat, beans, fortified grains and nuts. The recommended daily dose of zinc for adult females is 8 milligrams, and 11 milligrams for adult males.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a supplement that helps the immune system and protects the body from diseases and infections, as the Office of Dietary Supplements describes. Vitamin C is a water soluble nutrient that acts as an antioxidant in the body protecting the cells from the damaging effects of free radicals that come from pollution, smoke and UV rays. Vitamin C is naturally found in sources such as citrus fruits, broccoli, strawberries, cantaloupe and tomatoes. A vitamin C supplement can be taken by itself or in combination with other nutrients. Adult males need at least 90 milligrams of vitamin C per day, and adult females need 75 milligrams daily.

Tea Tree Oil

According to Medline Plus, tea tree oil is one of the supplements that help prevent ear infections. Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves of the tea tree plant. This oil can be applied directly to the skin to treat topical infections like acne, scabies and ringworms. It can also be used as an antiseptic for burns, insect bites and cuts. Tea tree oil also helps prevent recurrent infections in the ear such as otitis media and otitis externa.
