How to Adjust the Height of a Reebok Step

Reebok Steps are the industry standard for step aerobics, and the brand you'll likely find in commercial gyms. You can also use them at home. Once you receive your step, you'll notice that it comes with one basic platform, along two or four square risers, so you can increase the height of the step as your level of activity changes. The American Council on Exercise recommends adjusting your step so your knees bend to a 60-degree angle for the best and safest results.

Step 1

Position the Reebok Step on a clear space on your floor. If you're adding height mid-workout, keep your risers on hand for smoother transitions.

Step 2

Lift one side of the Reebok Step off of the ground. You'll notice that it has a graduated leg that has two small steps. Choose the riser that corresponds with your level of expertise, as they come in 6-inch, 8-inch and 10-inch heights. Slide it under the end of the Reebok Step.

Step 3

Fit the leg into the steps of the riser. Because the risers and the step are different colors, it should look something like a puzzle when they're properly fitted. The riser will complete the bottom of the step so that it's a few inches higher and has a wider, more stable base.

Step 4

Press down on the top of the step to snap the riser into place. Then, repeat the process on the other side of the step so the step sits level. Snap into place and press down on the top of the step to test for stability. The step shouldn't wobble.

Tips and Warnings

  • Start with a 4-inch height, without a riser if you're a beginner, suggests Gin Miller, the mother of step aerobics and the instructor of the Reebok Step aerobics programs. Add risers when you become more proficient and confident in your skills. Never raise your step more than 10 inches, unless you're an expert or training with an advanced personal trainer.
