The Ab Lounger is an in-home fitness product by Fitness Quest, which has a line of popular "as seen on TV" products, including the Gazelle gliders. The Ab Lounger resembles a lounge chair. You lie on your back or side to perform various jackknife-style abdominal exercises. The Ab Lounger and Ab Lounger 2 have the same function but differ in size.
Function
Fitness Quest claims that the Ab Lounger provides the ultimate abdominal workout while supporting your head, neck and back. The Ab Lounger gets you off the floor for your abdominal workout. The back of the device supports your upper body, which the manufacturer claims eliminates the stiff necks often associated with doing crunches on the floor.
You can target your main and side abs with either Ab Lounger model. They are designed for the same eight ab exercises: basic jackknife, oblique jackknife, jackknife with leg lift, extended arm jackknife, extended leg jackknife, torso and hip flexor stretch, advanced jackknife and lateral jackknife. The manuals for both devices provide instructions for these eight exercises.
Design
The Ab Lounger and Ab Lounger 2 have the same basic design. An A-frame supports the lounger. Heavy-duty rubber bands connect the lounger to the frame, creating tension. Foot rests, handlebars and a pull-up handle allow for different grips and exercise positions. The original Ab Lounger has an actual pull-up metal bar above your head that you hold for support. The Ab Lounger 2 has a pull-up strap, not a bar. The handlebars of the Ab Lounger are U-shaped; the handlebars of the Ab Lounger 2 are half the length of the original.
Specifications
The biggest difference between the original Ab Lounger and the Ab Lounger 2 is size. The Ab Lounger 2 is smaller and lighter. The original Ab Lounger is 54 inches long, 31.75 inches wide and 45.5 inches tall. It weighs 36 lbs. and can handle a maximum user weight of 275 lbs. The Ab Lounger 2 is 39.5 inches long, 30 inches wide and 44.5 inches tall. It weighs 32 lbs. and can only handle a maximum user weight of 250 lbs.
Availability
Neither the Ab Lounger nor Ab Lounger 2 are available as new products. As of December 2010, the only Ab Lounger available is the Ab Lounger Sport. This model has the same design and specifications of the Ab Lounger 2. The Sport comes packaged with a fitness computer that counts reps, times your workout and shows approximate calories burned.
