Baseball workout drills are designed to improve your speed and endurance on the baseball field as well as get you in shape for the regular season. While many baseball workout drills focus on endurance training and arm conditioning, other workout drills are designed to help improve your power at the plate.
Relay Race Baserunning Drill
This base running drill is designed to improve your speed on the base paths as well as your overall endurance. Divide your team up into two separate teams, with the first team getting into a straight line at home plate. On your coach's whistle, have the first player from the first team run around the bases. As soon as he crosses home plate have the next player go. Continue in this fashion until everyone has gone. Have your coach time the race and mark down the total time. Have the next team line up and attempt to beat the first team's time.
Doughnut Swinging Drill
This drill is designed to increase bat speed as well as strengthen your arms and shoulders. Stand up at the plate in your normal stance. Place a doughnut weight on your bat to add additional resistance to your swing. Have a coach line up a few feet to the side of you and get down on one knee. As he tosses you the ball, step into your swing and take a full cut at the ball. Repeat until fatigued.
Long Toss Drill
According to QC Baseball, this drill is designed to build your arm strength as well as stretch out your arm muscles. Grab a partner and stand 10 feet from each other. Have another group of two stand the same distance away from each other, but a few feet to your side. Have a coach place several cones behind you, placing them every five feet from each other. On his whistle, toss the ball to your teammate. If he catches and it does not hit the ground, step back to the next cone. From here, throw the ball to each other on the fly. Continue this until you cannot hit your partner on the fly or someone drops the ball.
Ball Throwing Sprints
This ball throwing drill will help improve your throwing accuracy as well as keep you in shape. Break your team into two lines and line up on the left field foul line. From here, two coach's will stand in center field, approximately 10 feet from each other. If you are the first player in the first line, jog out to one of the coach's in center field. From here, he sprint towards the right field foul line while the other coach throws you a fly ball. Catch the ball and toss it back to the coach's. Have the rest of the player's perform the drill before breaking.
