PH is a notation for the measurement of acids and basicity of a liquid solution. Water is known to be neutral, with a pH of 7.0, the neutral point on the measurement scale. Anything greater than this number is alkaline, while a number lower than 7.0 is considered too acidic. PH balance in the human body is an important biochemical process, and there are steps that can be taken too regulate excess acid.
Step 1
Determine your pH levels. A test will determine if the pH level needs too be raised or decreased, with 7.0 being neutral and anything less being too acidic. There are several types of pH test kits available on the market, for all types of liquids. One way to test acid levels in the human body is to use an electronic meter, which measures pH levels in the blood. Another way is to use a litmus paper test, which requires urine or saliva to to change color of the paper, red being acidic and blue meaning alkaline. The latter is the most cost effective, common and simple way, but not mandatory. These kits can be found in department and hardware stores, as well as online.
Step 2
Stay away from acid-forming foods. Anything under 7.0 is considered too acidic, so acid-forming foods will decrease this number and should be avoided. Alcohol, coffee, soft drinks, meat and milk are among the everyday foods that are acid-forming. Consider talking with a health practitioner or conducting an online search for a list of foods that are acid-forming, as there are many. One may probably find some foods that are surprisingly acidic that were thought otherwise.
Step 3
Eat more alkaline-forming food. Fresh fruits and vegetables are among the top alkaline-producing foods that restore electrolytes and minerals, neutralize acid and remove it from the body. Though many fruit and veggies contain acid, such as citrus and alpha hydroxy, the process of digestion and metabolism have an alkaline effect on the body, so consumption of these is fine. Again, talking with a professional or searching online for a list of acid and alkaline-forming foods will ensure safety and success.
Step 4
Use household items, deodorant, soaps and the like that do not contain chemical poisons and are made from natural ingredients. These can be found at health and organic food stores, as well as online. Everyday items such as toothpaste, laundry soap, household cleaners, and the like may contain harmful, toxic chemicals such as aluminum, FD&C colors, propylene glycol, benzine and many others, which seep into the body and create acid. Organic or natural stores offer everyday household products that are free from most chemicals found in domestic brands.
Step 5
Take supplements that can restore pH in the body. There are many supplements available on the market today that are made specifically to alkaline the body. Green or "super" food powders are also a good supplement choice, since they are made up from raw fruit and veggies that are high in minerals, vitamins, probiotics and antioxidants. Talk to a doctor about using supplements and always read the label instructions before beginning a regimen.
