Glucosamine, chondroitin and methyl sulfonylmethane, usually abbreviated MSM, are three nutritional supplements that are often sold together as a complex. Glucosamine is a component of cartilage, a vital connective tissue that connects and pads joints. Chondroitin is another substance found in cartilage that helps to lubricate joints. MSM is an artificial chemical that is a rich source of sulfur. Taken as a complex, these supplements are purported to provide several health benefits. However, clinical evidence supporting these claims is scarce, and you should consult with your doctor before taking any new health supplement.

Arthritis

Health supplements containing MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin are often taken to improve arthritis symptoms, despite the lack of evidence supporting the use of this complex. Several studies have evaluated the effectiveness of glucosamine in treating arthritis and have found inconclusive evidence that it is effective, reports MedlinePlus. Manufacturers claim that chondroitin and MSM increase the effectiveness of glucosamine in treating arthritis; however, these claims have not been proven by rigorous clinical studies.

Joint Pain

Joint pain, either caused by arthritis or unrelated to arthritis, is another condition that can be treated by a MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin complex, the manufacturers claim, according to the Nutritional Research Center. The results of a subset of studies suggest that glucosamine reduces joint pain, but other studies have found no effect, explains the New York University Langone Medical Center. In those studies that did find evidence of reduced pain not everyone taking glucosamine benefited. No studies have demonstrated that the addition of MSM and chondroitin improves the pain-relieving potential of glucosamine, reports MedlinePlus.

Additional Benefits

MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin are sometimes taken for other reasons, including weight loss and treatment of glaucoma. Studies of glucosamine alone have not found conclusive evidence of effectiveness for these other uses, reports MedlinePlus. No studies have evaluated if combining MSM and chondroitin with glucosamine enhances its effectiveness in treating glaucoma or aiding weight loss efforts.
