Dexatrim claims its over-the-counter supplements can help you reach your weight loss goals. Dexatrim contains ingredients that can cause side effects, and the Food and Drug Administration does not evaluate dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness. Consult your doctor before taking this or any weight loss supplement.
Caffeine
Most Dexatrim products contain 25 to 50 mg caffeine, or about one-quarter to one-half the amount in a cup of coffee. Dexatrim has a Green Tea Formula, and caffeine is a natural component in green tea extract. The Mayo Clinic states that caffeine is a common weight loss supplement. It may increase your metabolism, or rate of calorie burn, but probably not enough to have a big impact on the amount of body fat you lose. Caffeine can induce rapid, short-term weight loss, because when you take caffeine, you lose water weight. It may also help suppress your appetite so you eat less. Caffeine increases your heart rate, and can make you nervous or jittery. You may have trouble sleeping if you take caffeine, and get headaches when you stop taking it.
Chromium and Vitamins
All the Dexatrim dietary supplements contain chromium, and some of them have other essential vitamins and minerals. Chromium is an essential mineral for regulating your blood sugar levels. It improves the effects of insulin in your body, and chromium deficiency can lead to type 2 diabetes. It is a common ingredient in weight loss supplements, but according to the Linus Pauling Institute Micronutrient Information Center, chromium does not appear to be very effective in helping you lose weight. Some of the Dexatrim products provide up to 1,000 percent of the daily value for the B vitamins thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, folic acid and vitamin B-12. Dexatrim claims that its products break down carbohydrates and fat, and that this promotes weight loss. Your body needs these vitamins for metabolism, but taking extra will not increase your burn rate. To lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than you expend, so only use Dexatrim as part of a calorie-controlled and balanced diet.
Herbal Ingredients
Some of the ingredients in Dexatrim are meant to suppress your appetite or increase your metabolic rate. The diet supplements contain green tea and oolong tea extract, which provide epigallocatechin gallate, or ECGC. The Mayo Clinic says people use green tea to decrease appetite and increase calorie burn, although it may not be effective. Dexatrim has Asian, or panax, ginseng root, which acts as a stimulant to improve your mood and make you feel more energetic. Dexatrim Max Complex 7 also has 7-Keto, a compound that your body naturally produces and that Dexatrim claims will aid in weight loss. Dexatrim does not contain ephedra, a weight loss supplement that can cause heart attacks. Research into the safety and effectiveness of the ingredients in Dexatrim is not complete, and you should consult your doctor before taking any weight loss supplement.
