Part of the normal aging process is a loss of skin elasticity that can result in sagging facial skin. As we get older, skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity. Improving skin elasticity can be achieved using a variety of different treatments, but unfortunately there is no way to permanently restore skin elasticity. Many of the temporary treatments and solutions, however, do help improve sagging skin and can make you feel better about yourself and your looks.

Solutions and Treatments

There area a number of different treatments that can improve the visual appearance of sagging skin, but there is no one permanent solution. These treatments range from the noninvasive to the invasive and may include simple facial exercises, skin creams, fillers, vitamins, minor skin procedures and more radical facial surgery.

Facial Exercises

The Ohio State University Medical Center recommends a number of different facial exercises to strengthen the facial muscles. These exercises target specific muscles of the eyes and forehead. Begin by raising your eyebrows and wrinkling your forehead. Maintain this position and then shut your eyes as tightly as you can. Open your eyes and then squeeze them tightly shut again. Repeat this several times once a day.

Fillers

Fillers help to fill out areas that have developed fine lines such as at the corners of the eyes or above the top lip. You can also reduce scars using fillers, according to the New Zealand Dermatological Society Incorporated. Fillers are usually injected into the skin and use substances of collagen, fat or hyaluronic acid. They are designed plump up the depressed areas of sagging skin and give a more youthful appearance. Filler injections only last a certain length of time and need to be repeated on a regular basis.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion involves removing the outer superficial layers of skin on your face. Newer smoother skin is exposed as the older surface layers are removed during this procedure. The new skin is tighter and firmer, giving a more youthful appearance. Although this procedure does offer effective, long-lasting results, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, eventually your skin will return to its original state.

Radiothermoplasty

Radiothermoplasty helps tighten loose skin. It is a noninvasive procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to firm and tighten facial skin. It is a relatively simple procedure that does not require a general anesthetic. It takes around two hours to complete, and results can last up to 10 years, according to the New Zealand Dermatological Society Incorporated.
