Starting a diet can be overwhelming. You may know how much weight you want to lose or what size pants you want to fit into, but the hardest part is figuring out how to get there. Keep your eyes on the prize, and stay motivated by using simple but effective techniques.

Read Labels

One of the most important parts of eating healthy is knowing what you are putting into your mouth. Reading labels is the first step. Depending on the diet technique you are using, you may be focused on the number or sources of calories. When you are reading labels, pay attention to serving sizes, and read the ingredients. After a while, reading food labels becomes second nature.

Exercise

When you are trying to lose weight, regular physical activity is key. Select a type of exercise that you enjoy, and start there. Most people need at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise almost every day. Take a walk with your kids, dog or spouse, hit the treadmill or do some yard work. Swimming, jogging or doing an exercise video at home are other options that might be appealing. Try to increase the amount you exercise every week, as long as it is authorized by your doctor.

Eat Regular Meals

Skipping breakfast or other meals can lead to eating while you are in starvation mode. This leads to fat storage. It also can set you up to be tempted to eat something that is not on your diet. Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time, and make sure you eat regularly to avoid going into starvation mode and eating impulsively.

Practice Portion Control

The "do not eat" list does not have to be long. With portion control, you can have your cake -- just don't eat the whole thing. Determine what food portions are acceptable on your diet. Get used to measuring or estimating portions properly. When you order food at a restaurant, plan ahead and wrap up what you know is outside of your limit.

Write It Down

Accountability is key when you are dieting. Stay on track by writing down what you eat and comparing it to the diet plan you are following. There are mobile applications and websites that can help you track your progress. Keep a log of what you are eating and the progress you are making to stay accountable to yourself and your weight loss plan.
