Although attentive deficit hyperactivity disorder typically affects children and adolescents, the condition can also be found amongst adults. According to the National Institute of Mental health, 4.1 percent of adults also have the disorder. In order to treat ADHD, many patients require the use of prescritpion stimulants. Adderall is the brand name for a drug that contains a mixture of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine salts. The drug is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of ADHD in children and adults. Unfortunately, the stimulant effect can be compounded in patients who consume products containing caffeine.

Stimulating Effects on Heart

Stimulants can have many effects on the cardiovascular system. The use of stimulants has been known to increase blood pressure and heart rate. Patients who have excess stimulant activity may be at higher risk for stroke, arrythmias and heart attacks. Cardiovascular complications can be abrupt and life-threatening.

Stimulating Effects on Mental Health

Although stimulants can increase concentration and alertness, they can also have a negative impact on mental health. Stimulants may also cause irritability, aggression, anxiety, and other mood or mental disorders. Although rarely life-threatening, mood and behavioral changes can have social and economic complications.

Stimulating Effects on the Neurological System

Since stimulants increase brain activity, uncontrolled electrical activity can lead to the development of seizures. According to the Adderall XR product package insert, there is the possibility that stimulants may lower the threshold for seizure activity. Since Adderall can exacerbate certain health conditions and interact with other medications, patients should speak to their physician before use. Patients should also speak with their doctor regarding appropriate amounts of caffeine consumption that can be safely taken with prescription stimulants.
