Losing weight can be complicated and seems to never go as fast as you'd like it. Limiting your weight loss to one or two pounds per week will be more likely to lead to long-term success than employing the use of quick fixes, according to the University of Maryland. However, if you are looking to jump-start the process and lose a greater amount in a shorter period of time, there are several specific diets that can help you in your efforts.

South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet was created by Dr. Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist from South Beach, Florida. The eating plan is meant to be more of a way of eating for life rather than a diet, as it was originally developed to help his heart patients lose weight and improve their cardiovascular health. The program contains a two-week induction phase, when you mostly eat protein and vegetables; the premise is to replace your bad eating habits with healthier options. The combination of eating fewer calories and carbs will help you lose 10 pounds quickly.

Mayo Clinic Diet

The Mayo Clinic Diet was designed on the premise that being hungry leads to diet disaster, but the two-week induction phase of this diet says you'll be able to lose 6 to 10 pounds in just 14 days. Healthy foods are emphasized on this program, including whole grains, lean protein, fruit and vegetables. Developing healthy habits and eliminating negative ones are also highlighted. Along with weight loss, benefits of this program are said to include a reduced risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure and decreased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet has become one of the best-known plans for quick weight loss. Similar to the South Beach Diet, Atkins has a two-week induction phase in which you eat only protein, vegetables, and healthy poly- and monounsaturated fats, allowing you to most likely drop 10 pounds quickly. The difference between the two comes in their later phases, when Atkins continues to severely limit carbohydrates.

Sonoma Diet

The Sonoma Diet actually advocates carbohydrates, but it clarifies the difference between good and bad carbs. The diet promises fast weight loss during the induction phase by eliminating added sugars, processed foods, and saturated and trans fats. Instead, the diet recommends meals that consist of lean sources of protein, brown rice, legumes, sweet potatoes, fruit and vegetables.
