Herbal & Nutritional Supplements & Kidney Disease

The kidneys are fist-sized organs located in your upper abdomen, on both sides of your spine. These organs help regulate sodium and fluid levels in your body. They also help filter toxins and wastes from your bloodstream, flushing them from your body through your urinary tract. High levels of uric acid, presence of excess calcium in your urinary tract, infections and congenital defects can contribute to kidney disease. Although kidney disease requires the ongoing care of a physician, certain supplements and herbs may help treat the symptoms of this condition.

Dandelion Root

Supplements containing dandelion root may help prevent the symptoms of kidney disease. The chemical compounds in dandelion root may help flush waste and excess minerals from your kidneys. This may help improve kidney function and prevent additional damage to kidney cells. It may also help prevent the formation of kidney stones caused by mineral deposits in your urinary tract. Talk to your doctor if you plan to use dandelion root supplements to treat kidney disease. In rare cases, dandelion may cause diarrhea or stomach upset.

Cranberry

Supplements containing cranberry extract may help improve the symptoms of kidney disease, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The New Healing Herbs." Castleman notes a study cited in the "Journal of the American Medical Association" that indicates that cranberries help prevent recurring kidney and urinary tract infections. Cranberry supplements may also acidify your urine, preventing the accumulation of minerals that form kidney stones.

Uva Ursi

Uva ursi is an herb that is native to China, although it is now cultivated in temperate areas of North America. This herb is a natural diuretic, and may help flush wastes from your kidneys. This herb may also offer antibiotic benefits, preventing bacterial and viral infections that can worsen the symptoms of kidney disease. Check with your doctor before using uva ursi supplements to address kidney disease. The tannins in this herb may upset your stomach.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an immune system enhancer, and it may help your body fight off viruses and bacteria that can attack kidney cells. This vitamin may also acidify your urine. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, and it may help prevent the oxidation of lipids and free radical molecules. Oxidation of these molecules may allow them to attack kidney cells, causing damage and potentially speeding the progression of kidney disease.
