GTF chromium -- also called glucose tolerance factor chromium, or Cr-GTF -- is a natural chromium picolinate supplement. Your body uses this essential mineral to help regulate blood sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Your doctor may recommend adding a GTF chromium supplement to your diet if you're an adult who doesn't get the recommended 25 to 35 mcg of chromium each day, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports. Talk with your medical provider about the potential side effects of GTF chromium before you begin taking this supplement.
Stomach Irritation
Stomach irritation may occur following treatment with GTF chromium. Side effects of nausea or vomiting may arise, which may lead to appetite loss. Taking this supplement after eating a small snack or meal may help reduce or prevent the severity or onset of stomach-related side effects. Seek care from your doctor of stomach discomfort becomes severe or does not subside.
Skin Reactions
Mild flushing or itching may occur as side effect of receiving treatment with this supplement. Flushing may cause your skin to appear unusually red and the affected skin region may feel warm to the touch or tingly. If you experience intense itching, control your urge to scratch. Excessive scratching may increase your risk of developing a skin infection. Skin reaction side effects are typically temporary and resolve within a few hours of treatment with GFT chromium.
Headache or Dizziness
You may experience recurrent headache pain or dizziness as side effect of GTF chromium, RxList warns. These side effects may make it difficult for you to concentration or remain attentive while you are at work, home or school. During episodes of dizziness, remain seated until this sensations passes. Avoid moving about while you are dizzy as doing so may elevate your risk of falling down. If headache pain persists, consider taking an over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate head discomfort. Consult your physician if these side effects become severe or prevent you from performing your usual daily duties.
Cognitive Problems
Cognitive problems may arise during treatment with GTF chromium, RxList reports. You may have difficulty thinking clearly or may develop poor coordination. Your judgment may also become impaired, which may lead to poor decision-making. Seek prompt care from your doctor if you notice any of these cognitive changes while you are taking this chromium supplement.
Serious Side Effects
Prolonged or excessive treatment with GTF chromium may cause serious side effects. High levels of chromium in your blood may cause damage to your liver or kidneys. Additionally, you may develop heart rate irregularities, the UMMC reports. Contact your physician as soon as possible if you experience heart rate changes or exhibit signs of liver or kidney problems, such as jaundice, itchy skin, abdominal pain or excessive fatigue.
