An exercise bike allows you to get the same workout as cycling outdoors while still in the comfort of your home. Exercise bikes are safe to use at any fitness level and typically are not difficult to operate. Residential and commercial exercise bike models are sold by companies such as Schwinn, Life Fitness and Precor. You may purchase stationary exercise bikes from sporting supply stores or specialty fitness retailers.
Cardio Exercise
Riding an exercise bike is a good form of cardiovascular exercise. Regular cardio exercise has numerous benefits for the body. When you exercise, endorphins are released into the body. Endorphins help numb any pain you may feel as well as reduce stress. Cardiovascular benefits include increased circulation and better delivery of oxygen to the blood.
Muscle Toning
Recumbent exercise bikes require you sit up straight with your legs in front of you. Since you need to fight gravity to keep your legs in front of your body, more muscles are worked than when using an upright exercise bike. A recumbent bike tones the thighs, buttocks and lower abs.
Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain may be treated with the use of an exercise bike. According to a 2000 study performed by Dr. Martin Hoffman and presented to the American College of Sports Medicine, riding an exercise bike on a regular basis reduces the discomfort level of patients suffering from lower back pain. Participants rode a stationary bike for a total of 30 minutes at moderate intensity and reported pain results after the exercise. It was speculated by the study that the results stemmed from the altering of a person's pain perception while using an exercise bike.
Less Stress on Joints
You do not put stress on the joints when riding an exercise bike. The low-impact motion of pedaling does not stress the joints like treadmill workouts. If you ride on a regular basis, the flexibility in your muscles will improve along with your range of motion
