PrimaCare prenatal vitamins are prescription supplements indicated for women who are pregnant, nursing, in childbearing years or trying to conceive, according to Drugs.com. PrimaCare has an improved formulation, PrimaCare One, containing the most essential vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids, reports redOrbit in December 2008. However, Ther-Rx Corporation, the makers of PrimaCare, issued a voluntary recall of the prenatal vitamins on February 3, 2009 because they may have failed current manufacturing standards, reports the company website.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Each capsule of PrimaCare One prenatal vitamins contains 300mg of omega-3 fatty acids, including 30mg of linolenic acid and 30mg of linoleic acid, lists Drugs.com. According to eMedTV, PrimaCare and PrimaCare One also contain the omega-3 FAs docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, and eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA. Omega-3 fatty acids may improve brain development and vision of the developing fetus, and may reduce the chance of postpartum depression in the mother.
Vitamins and Minerals
A dosage of PrimaCare One prenatal vitamins contains 25mg of vitamin C, 170 international units of vitamin D3, 30 IU of vitamin E and 25mg of vitamin B6. The supplement also contains 150mg of calcium and 27mg of iron, according to Drugs.com. The specific formulation of vitamins in prenatal supplements is important for a healthy pregnancy.
Folic Acid
PrimaCare One prenatal vitamins contain 1mg of folic acid in each dosage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a daily intake of 400mcg of folic acid if you are trying to conceive or if you are in the first trimester of pregnancy to decrease the risk of major birth defects of the baby's brain and spine.
