Skateboarding is an increasingly popular pastime for kids and adults alike across the world, not to mention a growing "extreme" sport. If you're looking to get started in skateboarding, but you're not sure where to start, you can take simple steps to learn how to get on and stay on the board before moving on to simple tricks and techniques.
Step 1
Find someone experienced in skateboarding who can help teach you the proper technique and correct your form. Ask the person to watch you as your practice and give you tips and suggestions about where you should place your feet, how to stop and how to maintain your balance.
Step 2
Learn the basic parts of the skateboard and the terminology of skateboarding so you know what you're talking about when you're being taught. Terms like "ollie," "kickflip" and "grind" should become second nature to you as you learn the basic ins and outs of skateboarding.
Step 3
Watch experienced skateboarders at a skate park or in the neighborhood and try to emulate the basic moves, such as how they get on and off the skateboard, and how they push off and balance on the board.
Step 4
Step on the skateboard while standing next to a wall or sturdy surface for balance. Stand on the skateboard with both feet and practice balancing.
Step 5
Step on the board with your left foot toward the front. Push off slowly with your right foot to propel the board forward. Step on with your right foot and place it on the back of the board. Extend your arms out to keep your balance. Ride for several feet, then drag your right foot to stop the board.
Step 6
Practice riding at higher speeds and keeping your balance. Lean to the right and left to turn your skateboard. Once you have mastered the ability to ride the skateboard, you can move on to trying basic tricks.
Step 7
Stick with the things you enjoy doing. If you don't enjoy learning freestyle tricks or grinding or other aspects of skateboarding, focus on what you enjoy and keep learning in those areas. Focusing on what you enjoy doing will make it less likely for you to get frustrated and give up.
