Menopause is the natural biological process ending menstruation and fertility in women. Large hormonal changes occur during menopause and may result in uncomfortable symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood swings and weight gain. Certain foods can aggravate these symptoms, and avoiding them may help to reduce the undesirable effects of menopause. Diet is an important component of maintaining good health after menopause, so consult your doctor before making any drastic changes to your diet.

Spicy Foods

Hot flashes are a common, undesirable symptom of menopause. Eating spicy foods can sometimes trigger hot flashes, according to GeorgiaHealthInfo.gov. Avoiding spicy foods may help you reduce the incidence of hot flashes.

Caffeine

Caffeine consumption should also be limited during menopause. Hot flashes can be triggered by caffeinated beverages, especially those that are served hot like coffee and tea, reports the Mayo Clinic. Additionally, caffeine can worsen sleeping problems that sometimes occur during menopause. Limiting your intake of caffeine may help reduce hot flashes and sleep disturbances.

Alcohol

Hot flashes can also be triggered by alcohol, WomensHealth.gov explains. Health experts recommend limiting alcohol intake to one drink per day for menopausal women. Alcohol can also contribute to sleep disturbances, and reducing alcohol intake during menopause may also promote healthy sleep patterns.
